Where to apply and how to book

  • Apply where you live in Vietnam: the embassy in Hanoi (northern provinces down to Hue and Quang Tri) or the consulate-general in Ho Chi Minh City (Da Nang and further south).
  • Book an online appointment: one appointment per person and per application; passport and ID card need separate appointments. Incomplete applications need a new appointment.
  • First-time German passport (adult or child): do not use the booking system; email the mission with scans of your documents.
  • Fingerprints are taken from age 6, so you must attend in person.

Documents for adults

Bring originals and one copy:

  • Deregistration certificate (Abmeldebescheinigung) if you have one: not required, but it makes the fee much lower.

Collecting the passport and moving your Vietnamese visa

  • Hanoi sends finished passports by courier; personal collection only for a good reason.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: the consulate-general's page says collection in person without appointment (Mon, Tue, Thu 08:30–09:30); confirm when you book, as the general booking page mentions courier delivery.
  • Your old passport is cancelled. Take the old and new passports to the Vietnamese immigration office to transfer your visa or temporary residence card.
  • Children's passports (Kinderreisepass) were abolished on 1 January 2024; children get a regular or temporary passport.
