What to do
Report the loss to the Vietnamese police
Get a police report of the loss. You need it at the German mission and at Vietnamese immigration.
Book an appointment at the German mission
Embassy in Hanoi or consulate-general in Ho Chi Minh City; call if it is too urgent to wait for an appointment.
Get a replacement document
A travel document valid only for returning to Germany, or a temporary passport if you need to travel elsewhere (usually 3–5 working days).
Get a consular certificate
The mission issues a certificate that Vietnamese immigration requires.
Get the Vietnamese immigration endorsement
Take the new document, the certificate and the police report to Vietnamese immigration; usually 2–7 days. Without it you cannot leave Vietnam.

Emergencies
Outside office hours the embassy runs an emergency line (German or English; no visa questions) listed on its official page. Registering with the crisis list ELEFAND is recommended. Afterwards, apply for a new passport: renew a German passport in Vietnam.
